What is a 3GP video file?

3GP is a video container that holds one or more video streams, audio tracks, and optional subtitles. Different containers support different codecs, so compatibility depends on both the wrapper AND what is inside it. 3GP files are tiny and decode on the weakest hardware imaginable, which is why feature phones and low-end handsets still record it.
Structurally they are close relatives. 3GP is built from the same ISO Base Media File Format box layout MP4 uses — a tree of atoms holding the media data plus an index that says where each frame starts. That is why converting between them is usually a rewrap rather than a re-encode: the streams are copied across untouched and only the wrapper is rewritten, which takes seconds even on a feature-length file. 3GP is the container the 3GPP standardised for early mobile phones, when video had to fit a 176x144 screen and a 2G data plan.
Because the handset encodes to whatever its chip does in hardware, and 3GP is what that silicon was built around. The camera app never asks — it writes the format the device can produce at full frame rate without heating up. Converting afterwards is normal and costs nothing in quality if you pick a target that keeps the same payload.
Browsers ship decoders for a deliberately short list of formats, and 3GP is not on it — the licensing, the codec variety it permits, or simply its age keeps it out. The file is not broken and a desktop player will open it, but nothing you do to the page will make a browser render it. Converting to a web-native container is the only reliable route to inline playback. 3GP is capped at low resolutions and mono speech-grade audio; upscaling it will not restore detail that was never captured.
Usually yes, because the chips in phones, tablets and televisions decode this kind of payload in dedicated silicon rather than on the main processor. That is the difference between a video that plays cool for two hours and one that heats the device and drains it in forty minutes. Where the format falls down is app support rather than decoding — the codec is fine, the wrapper is what a gallery app may refuse. 3GP holds H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 2 video with AMR narrowband speech audio, all tuned for minimal bitrate rather than quality.

The format still opens, and there is no urgency about converting an archive that is not causing trouble, but it is no longer where the tooling or the efficiency is going. For anything new, a current format costs nothing extra and avoids the next round of this question a few years from now.
Beside it, or into the picture. 3GP has no subtitle stream of its own, so the two options are a sidecar .srt file the player loads alongside the video, or burning the text into the frames during a re-encode. The sidecar keeps the subtitles editable and switchable but travels as a second file that is easy to lose; burning in survives any transfer but cannot be turned off afterwards.
Because that is all the format dependably carries. Extra audio streams can be written into a 3GP, but playback support past the first one is inconsistent enough that most tools simply keep one and discard the others. If the source had a commentary or a second language, extract those to separate audio files rather than trusting them to a container that hides them.
